Ep 13 - Song 5: "Rio Grande" by The Lawn Chairs

"The song commemorates an experience on the 'Savanna Studio' that the ISU Department of Landscape Architecture conducts each fall, during which students and faculty travel around the country for extended field study. In fall 2011 the travel included a visit to Big Bend National Park in SW Texas and a canoe trip down the Rio Grande, and Martin wrote 'Rio Grande' the following spring. The song is dedicated to Professor Gary Hightshoe, the 'godfather' of the Savanna Studio, who led the Rio Grande adventure in 2011 and retired the following year.

"Kevin Lindgren and Tommy Lewis were already singer-songwriters when they joined in January 2013 to form the Americana duo Lindgren & Lewis. Ep 13 - Song 8: "Too Late to Stay (live solo acoustic version)" by Nate Nelson

"The Nate Nelson Acoustic Show started out as a solo gig playing for tips in 2013 and has evolved into an acoustic/electric duo that is growing in popularity and developing a following with a setlist of original songs and unique cover tunes. These two guys (Nate Nelson and Doug Cochran) do what they can to stay away from the mainstream and gravitate toward the B side tunes from country artists like Hank Williams Jr., David Allan Coe and Gary Allan and modern 'red dirt' country bands like Cross Canadian Ragweed and southern rock staples like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker Band. These two have a way of switching gears mid-set and providing their own arrangements of more modern songs and offering their vision and songwriting talents with their lyrical weighted originals. 

"Nate, an Iowa boy originally, found his musical influence while living in Houston, Texas, but didn't take the leap of faith on stage until relocating (again) back to Des Moines in 2011. Nate's favorite bands include The Black Crowes, Widespread Panic and David Allan Coe, but he was ultimately inspired by the local Des Moines bands that provided the encouragement to "do it".

"Doug was born in Iowa as well. It's no surprise that he became a musician growing up in Fairfield. His truck drivin' life has made it's roots in Colorado, Arizona, Texas and in 2008 back here in Iowa. He played lead guitar in a few different bands throughout his life but never found the "right" fit... until now. Doug was heavily influenced by legendary guitarists like Joe Walsh and bands like Aerosmith, Steve Miller Band and, during his time In Texas, Cody Canada and Cross Candian Ragweed.

"These two first crossed paths on a freezing cold night in February 2014 while filling in at a gig for an ill mutual friend. After a couple of jam practices, they realized that what they had, deserved to be shared with the public.

Ep 12 - Song 1: "Moody's Point" by Lipstick Homicide

This is me, Dan OlderMusicGeek, here on this piece...

It was Feb 5, 2011, at The Space in Ames's 3rd Anniversary Show!

Lipstick Homicide came on at 3:10 and did a short 20 minutes set! But I was blown away!

But right after the set, I went to see them. Told them they were the best high school band that I have ever heard.

They then informed that they were 22!

In my defence, Rachel and Kate are rather short!

They were selling a CD-R that featured 5 of the 7 songs that would be on their split with Billy Raygun. I, of course, was like Fry yelling at them to take my money!

"Moody's Point" was the first song on it! I loved it! I was just getting over a nasty divorce and crawling out of a mean depression where I spent WAY too much time on the couch watching TV. This song sounded like it had been written about me!

And since that time, I have been a die hard Lipstick Homicide fan. Seen them multiple times. Have almost everything they have ever put out! And they have not let me down.

"Kate and I wanted to start a band together in high school when we realized we both loved and knew how to play all the songs from the movie Josie and the Pussycats. We were really into that pop punk girl band vibe and enlisted the best bass player we knew, Rachel, for the endeavor. It was really fun to be in a band with close friends. We were very silly and free-spirited. We listened to each other's ideas and tried to always incorporate them all. We played together every day and started writing originals and playing as Lipstick Homicide around Iowa City. Rachel and Kate are both amazing singers, players and song-writers. They are very dedicated to music as a craft and performance. Luke was a great addition to the band. I've never met a more enthusiastic or fun drummer. He had so many fantastic ideas that really set the band up for success. Even as high schoolers and later college freshmen, we all really put the band first. They've done some amazing things over the years and always managed to keep the original enthusiasm and friendship that made Lipstick Homicide click."

Ep 12 - Song 3: "Sister Sister" by CroKane

"I met Kate Kane in the fall of 2007 while we were both attending the University of Iowa. The first thing of hers that caught my attention were the solo acoustic recordings she had up on the MySpace. Kate is a top-notch singer-songwriter, it was obvious even back then, and I remember being real impressed that at the age of 18 she was all ready an established musician around Iowa City, both as a solo act and with her band Lipstick Homicide. I was intrigued and wanted to get to know her better, so I started pestering her, attended some of her shows, etc. I started half-jokingly mentioning that we should start a band, and I think I came up with the name CroKane before I even knew she owned a drum kit!

"Kate was pretty much the first drummer I'd played with, so I didn't have a lot to compare it to at the time. However that being said, jamming with Kate felt pretty effortless most of the time. I don't particularly enjoy writing out songs, and I've never liked rehearsing things ad nauseam. I'd much rather just improvise lyrics and riffs on the spot for a 100 different tracks just to keep the 10 good ones instead of trying to perfect the same thing over and over. I've never been that confident in my singing, especially back then, but Kate encouraged vocals over instrumentals and helped me to feel less self-conscious about it, which ultimately lead to better improvisation. Also with it just being the two of us we were able to easily sync up and follow each others playing, even more so than when I jam as duo with other male drummer friends of mine now.

"CroKane only played a handful of shows over it's 2-year lifespan, and Lipstick Homicide was always Kate's main band. I remember thinking it was funny how Lipstick would play more shows on a two week tour than CroKane would play in an entire two years of being a band. Playing on stage with Kate was pretty great for me though, nobody can say nothing when you've got a super-cool-punk-rock-chick playing drums behind you, especially when she's as good as Kate. It was a fun band while it lasted, and I always felt fortunate that Kate was willing to play with me and put up with my crap."

Ep 12 - Song 4: "What's Expected of You" by Kate Kane

"I met Kate in junior high. I feel like she was the first actual punk rocker that I knew in real life. Even at the age of 13 when everybody was trying to act cool and get people to like them, Kate's only concern was being herself and having her own identity. Sometimes this meant freaking people out by eating moldy chips off the floor during class or dying her hair half white and half black like Cruella Deville. It was so refreshing to meet a person that unique and carefree who wasn't even trying to be. That's just who she was!

"I remember Kate being the first one of all of us to write truly well crafted pop songs. The structure and chord changes of her songs were unbelievably hard for me to wrap my head around. I remember hanging out with her at a friend's house when she played me what I was convinced was a Beatles song, but actually turned out to be an original called 'What's Expected of You' that ended up on the Lipstick Homicide album 'Isn't It Glorious'

IMSC Ep 12 - Song 6: "Drunk Song" by Rachel Feldmann and Trevor Treiber

"I've been close friends with Kate and Luke since we were in a band together in 8th grade. Then we all met Rachel during our sophomore year of high school and our minds were blown. Even though it's been 10 years, I still remember the first time I heard Rachel play very vividly. It was at this thing called Jamnesty (a sort of high school talent show for bands & musicians). I went to it having low expectations as usual. Up until that point, I hadn't met anybody at my high school besides Kate and Luke that had the same attitude towards music as I did. But after I heard Rachel play, my world was instantly turned upside down. In all honesty, the band she played in wasn't really my thing. They were sort of a grungy 3 piece with the other two members being very average as far as high school musicians go. But Rachel out shined them and everybody else at that show by a long shot. I didn't know such a strong vocal delivery was capable of coming out of somebody that small. It was incredible how much passion and confidence she played and sang with even at that age. I remember thinking to myself "Fuck, we better make friends with her now before some other douchey band takes her away forever." So we did!

"Rachel is somebody who takes absolutely no shit from anybody. She has a drive that is unmatched. It was clear to me even back then that she knew exactly what she wanted to do and wasn't gonna let anything stand in her way. I'm convinced that she could have pursued any style of music and she would have been met with great success. It's just a shame that she chose the stinky poor life of a punk rocker. JK JK!

"It goes without saying that her songwriting is not something to be fucked with. It's kind of funny because I don't even really like modern pop punk these days, but every time I hear one of her new songs, it instantly restores my faith in the genre. It's a good thing that we grew up together and were close friends, otherwise I would have turned into a super obsessive Lipstick Homicide fan that followed them around to every show screaming their lyrics back at them on stage and slobbering and shitting all over myself. Actually, that life doesn't really sound too bad."
