PLAYLISTS - New Iowa Music on Bandcamp 2

This is just another in our long series of playlists. And like the name says, this one features the latest music by Iowa artists that I could find on Bandcamp. It features a blend of experimental, metal, instrumental, and electronic music, with a punk tune as well!

IHEARIC PODCAST - Episode 57: Justin's Modal Exploration (01/13/2018)

I had to reschedule this week's planned guest (stay tuned for February 3rd...). I've been obsessively working on a new composition for the past few days, so I decided that I'd use this week's show to present, demonstrate, and test drive some components of MODAL EXPLORATION!

The patch uses University of Iowa EMS instrument samples, found here: theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MIS.html
Will Huff's "HarpMusic" was an inspiration for Modal Exploration, and you can find his music here: huffcomposer.com
I adapted some data from David Huron's book Sweet Anticipation to help the patch convey the different modes. Check out Huron's research here: csml.som.ohio-state.edu/Huron
I've also made a lot of other music, which you can find all of these places: justinkcomer.com / justinkcomer.bandcamp.com / soundcloud.com/justin-comer-1 / youtube.com/justinkcomer / facebook.com/justinkcomer / twitter.com/justinkcomer / instagram.com/justinkcomer

Our next (*FREE*) iHearIC concert will be 1/25 8pm at The Mill, featuring performances by Maul of America, The Twisted Roots, and Treecloud! RSVP and invite your friends here: facebook.com/events/386069291938789

Next Sunday's show will be a preview of the 1/25 concert and will be broadcast live at 4pm on KRUI (krui.fm)!

IHEARIC PODCASTS - Episode 24: chaircrusher (05/20/2018)

Last week I teased a guest appearance from Kent Williams (aka chaircrusher). In his place, Michele Guild returned to co-host with me in her third appearance on the show. We closed out today's show by brainstorming ideas for our upcoming project, the impedecast.

Find all of Kent's stuff here: http://www.cornwarning.com / https://soundcloud.com/chaircrusher / https://chaircrusher.bandcamp.com / https://www.youtube.com/user/chaircrusher

IHEARIC VIDEOS - Lwa Live and in Pitch Darkness at The Englehart Theater in Iowa City on Oct 25, 2010

"Hailing from from Iowa City, Lwa usually consists of 2 core members who use a battery of electronic devices (from the hand built to the scavanged from garage sale, university surplus, etc) to produce strange aural landscapes. From the duo's inception in '03, their focus has shifted from cathartic, impenetrable tidal noise to dark skeletal pop structures with the collaboration of NIMBY's homemade electric drums, to their current mode. Collecting a great number of field recordings, the duo now focus on restrained and minimal tones emulating and embellishing the base of field recordings.

"Through out these years, the group has been active in their community, though touring is rare. They've played with many like-minded sound artists such as: Tim Hecker, Greg Davies, Kent Williams, Rene Hell, C. Spencer Yeh, Wet Hair, Boris, The Tanks, Melt-Banana, Outer Space, Moth Cock, David Daniell, Wolf Eyes, Raglani, Hair Police, Awesome Color, Sightings, Mountains, Gowns, and many, many other talented out-artists.

"Their recorded output is rare, since they primarily focus on a preparing a different set for each of their gigs. There have been a few tapes, CDRs, and a split lathe 10 inch. All in limited quantity. There exist several studio outings, though the bulk of their work has been documented in various live settings."

You can still listen to the interview here - https://yourownprivateiowa.bandcamp.com/track/episode-12-snailmate-part-1-of-2)

Last week local singer-songwritter and student Michaela Thompson sat down in the studio with me. We talked about her musical career and infuences, and about the road moving forward and her progresssion as an artist. It was a fun conversation, with some beautiful acoustic tunes to go along with!

YOUR OWN PRIVATE IOWA - Episode 8: QuërVo

What an impressive show QuërVo put on in the studio this week! Electronic music is something I did not know much about going into this episode, and honestly soemthing I didnt know Jose did, I had only seen him drum in Mumford's and play guitar with I.B.AIBU. I was compleatly blown away by his set, and the fact that he explained everything to me and the listener was a great way to show the entire set off. He plays and makes some really cool electronic music, as well as playing songs from other projects like Dr. Murdock. Jose gets really passionate and into everything he talks about, making for one of my most interesting episodes yet!

IMSC Ep 58 - Song 3: "High on Christmas" by Dan Bee

"Dan Bee started off life stillborn in Evanston IL in the mid 1970's. After his revival he did the normal baby thing, then the toddler thing. After going through some torturous years being picked on and ostracized as a teenager the pure isolation led him to lock up in a room with a guitar becoming a musician. Today he is an adult man child making music which aids him to bypass the crippling nature of his normal reclusiveness.

"Dan Bee is a songwriter who marches to the beat of his own drum. He does what he does and does it as well as he can. Some people will like it and some people will not. The music isn't trying to be anything in particular other than an expression of the emotion the songwriter is going through at the time of creation.

"Dan Bee is one of those weird musicians who doesn't really care about what guitar they are playing on or playing with technical skill. While those things do have their merits, Dan feels as long as what you do has passion and you have passion for it then that is enough.

"The music on this page can and will be anything from a rough acoustic demo recorded on a cell phone in a bedroom, to a full band of friends recorded in a lush studio.

"Here you go, have a listen and enjoy your life. :)"

Ep 53 - Song 9: "Surveillance Video" by Rhonda is a Dead Bitch

"But why bother alienating people with your band’s name when the music alone would do just fine?"
- from a review by Doug Musurock on the Still Single website

"Rhonda Is A Dead Bitch is a psych/krautrock/noise combo from Des Moines, Iowa consisting of Luke, Jason, Lindsay, Tyler and Emery."
- from their ReverbNation page

"As if their ballsy moniker and ballsier decision to release their new EP only on 180g vinyl (digital-only dicks be damned) didn’t already have my attention, I dropped the needle on my virgin copy of 'Laos' and proceeded to enjoy listening to Rhonda Is A Dead Bitch blast holes into the landscape of rock music in Des Moines with anti-hipster delight. What Rhonda Is A Dead Bitch admittedly lacks in musical mastery serves them well, because it allows them to play with refreshing gusto, honesty and creativity."

IMSC Ep 42 - Song 9: "say it with me!" by JC//jp

"JCϟjp is a musical and philosophical collaboration between composer/saxophonist/laptopist Justin K Comer and composer/violinist/laptopist jason palamara. Their recently released self titled album joins laptop infused loops with digital distortion and nonsensical robot soliloquies, presided over by soaring violin lines and growling saxophone riffs."

Ep 37 - Song 2: "Seance" by Rhonda is a Dead Bitch

"As if their ballsy moniker.. didn’t already have my attention, I dropped the needle on my virgin copy of “Laos” and proceeded to enjoy listening to Rhonda Is A Dead Bitch blast holes into the landscape of rock music in Des Moines with anti-hipster delight. What Rhonda Is A Dead Bitch admittedly lacks in musical mastery serves them well, because it allows them to play with refreshing gusto, honesty and creativity."
- from a Cityview review by Micheal Swanger

"Rhonda Is A Dead Bitch, formed out of the ashes of previous local failures such as Mayfair & Huxley and Teen Pussy, was originally conceived as a showcase for Luke the Amazing Drummer. Using a traditional combo lineup of drums, bass, guitar and keyboards, augmented with various noise generators and other electronics, they have accidentally fallen into a sound best described as psych-Krautrock-ambient."
