Eps 34, 52, and 60 - Iowa Music Showcase Halloween theme 2 by Jessica Villegas

"Founder and songwriter/singer/guitarist Trevor Holt said via e-mail that neither he nor bassist Jessica Villegas had played in bands before Foxholes formed. 'Jessica didn’t even play bass prior to joining the band, so it took some time to figure out how to put on a good show, how to network, etc.,' Holt wrote. 'Over the course of that time, we figured out what worked and what didn’t in terms of the set list and even the structure of the songs themselves. That was the biggest thing to come out of that first year – the development of the songs. Had we recorded this album a year ago, I can honestly say that it would not have been good. The sound would have been there, but it would have been an unfinished product. We really took the time to continually develop the songs ... .'"
- from a River Cities Reader article on The Foxholes

"You might know Jessica Villegas as the lone girl in Foxholes, slappin da bass. She also rocks a badass half-shaved hairstyle. Villegas was always destined to go down a creative path. Her father, Johnnie, DJs around Des Moines, that is when he’s not playing percussion for Canby; and her mother Susan was constantly working on different projects, like painting, when she was growing up. It was only right that she take up both mediums. While music is one of her passions, she’s also a visual artist who makes incredible paintings. In fact, the entire living room of her apartment is a studio, with one half devoted to music and the other to painting.

"She’s constantly at work on something and is now venturing out on her own with her debut solo performance tonight at the Des Moines Social Club’s Basement Bar. She joins Eden Stokka and Jennifer Hall on an all lady bill cuz girls rule and boys drool. The show will be a different vibe from Foxholes in that Villegas is taking a self-described more experimental route with her solo work."

IMSC Ep 34 - Song 2: "Black Angel" by Kate Kane

Kate Kane is an extremely difficult person to google and get info on, because she shares the same name as a lot of people, as well as a superhero and supernatural private eye.

But fortunately, I know her, so I can tell you this, she's been a singer, guitarist, and songwriter with the band Lipstick Homicide. Now has her own band, Starry Nights. And plays drums for Maiden Mars. And is constantly playing with other artists!

She also hosted and organized Open Mic Night at The Yacht Club in Iowa City. And is or was (?) president of Bloated Kat Records. Works for Sparkletart Records. Books for Trumpet Blossom Cafe. And has started Kate Kane Enterprises to put together live music shows!

And she still manages to put out some solo material from time to time!

IMSC Ep 34 - Song 3: "The Ballad of Outlaw Jameson Boone" by Liberty Hall Collective

"From The Beatles to Ty Segall to Panic at the Disco, Liberty Hall Collective’s music has been compared to a number of sounds, but it truly has no equals. Forged from a mutual necessity for music making in Storm Lake, Iowa in late 2013, the group is founded on a unique blend of 60s and 70’s-bred pop, modern-rock sensibilities, and a foundational love of all kinds of music. This is aided by an exciting and dynamic stage show with as many twists and turns as a great novel. The band’s second album, Lights, shows the band’s scope and scale expertly, from earth-shattering arena rock to reserved, delicate jazz-pop ventures. (I don’t know how to end this.)"
- from their Facebook page

"Hailing from the lands of corn (2 guys) and the lands of cheese (the other guy), Liberty Hall Collective was forged from a mutual necessity for music making in Storm Lake, Iowa in late 2013. Since then, they have risen to considerable acclaim for their unique mix of 60’s and 70’s-bred pop, modern rock sensibilities, and a foundational love of all kinds of music. From Brett Pongratz’s pop-punk-esque ventures to Kamron Warden’s Paul McCartney-style compositions to Chase Harrison’s anything-goes songwriting, the diverse range explored in the group is impressive. Liberty Hall Collective’s fun and diverse sound and stage antics are sure to delight audiences the world over."

IMSC Ep 34 - Song 5: ""Break Beat" by Angle, plus Angle's Halloween playlist on SoundCloud

"I have a vision for every project I do and I follow it through to the very end. I've been rapping since I was in the 6th grade, before social norms and stereotypes had a chance to latch on. I've been recording and doing shows since 1998, when I was at the University of Iowa. I've released 3 solo albums, a group effort, and been featured on numerous other projects (check discography). Real life has dealt blow after blow after sucker punch to my creative endeavors as an emcee trying to get my truth out to as many folks I can. I'm not a starving artist because I believe in self preservation, but I'm still very hungry. Throughout my treks I've had the laziest street team ever, but still love you people. Before I legally murder my stage name, I have much work to do. I have a timeline of various pockets of memories between large gaps of memory loss....live by post-it notes and 3x5 notecards."

IMSC Ep 34 - Song 6: "Death after Death" by The Law

"The Law were an early punk band from Des Moines, Iowa founded in the early 1980s. Members went on play in Scuffy the Cat and the Fastbacks...

"Tim Johnson and Charlie Chesterman were in a 50s cover band know as the Flashbacks that didn't really go anywhere. They discovered this "new" British music called punk and decided to form a punk band. After going through a few member changes and a few name changes they became White Lunch. (Tim Johnson-Guitar/vocals, Charlie Chesterman-Guitar/vocals, Aaron Johnson-guitar/vocals, Eric Coleman - Drums) Played out a bit had member problems and broke up. Then became the Law. From what little information I could find this was around 79/80.

"They put out a single and moved to Boston to hit the big time. Boston didn't work out and they moved back to Des Moines and split up shortly after that. Charlie Chesterman and Mac Stanfield went back to Boston and formed Scuffy the Cat. Tad Hutchinson headed off to college and on to play with the Fastbacks, Young Fresh Fellows and a number of other Seattle bands."
