EPISODE 27 - The Peace, Love, and Stuff Retrospective, Part 2 of 2

We present the second half of our retrospective on a "great little band from central Iowa"!

In this episode, we present some of the later stuff in their career, when they started embracing more of the vintage and rockabilly sound, brought on part by a new drummer and bassist.

We also include stuff from their Raygun EP and their final album. And like last time, we include some rare and unreleased material.

Ep 27 - Song 1: "Polka Dots" by Peace, Love, and Stuff (plus Chad Taylor from his Sound Stage column in Cityview)

"Peace Love and Stuff, the evening’s opening act, is a polished, high-energy act that’s a comfortable fit in a wide variety of lineups. Its sound is rockabilly infused and tight, with nary a weak link in the band. Timekeeper Joe McGuire and bassist Jacob Doll keep the low end hopping, while the band’s flash and sizzle is supplied by incomparable front woman Lavonne McRoberts and the sensational slide work of lead guitarist Dylan Boyle. Currently working on its first full-length album, Peace Love and Stuff has honed its live shows over the past several months, developing a performance that is cohesive and fun."
- from Chad Taylor in his Sound Stage column in Cityview

Dylan Boyle - guitar

IMSC Ep 27 - Extra 1: "Jolene" by Peace, Love, and Stuff / "Jolene" by BobTyler and The Reckless Hearts feat Lavonne McRoberts (plusDave Murphyfrom "Des Moines Is Not Boring")

This is a tune I can't include in my podcast, because I can't get the rights to the song. But I can include the video on my blog!

I've also included a version of the song that Lavonne did with Bob Tyler and The Reckless Hearts, which feature the drummer as the later Peace, Love, and Stuff.

"I get bored sometimes and I go back and re-read what I’ve written. I suppose it is probably helpful so I can spot phrases I overuse and stuff I maybe over promote, but really its boredom. Anyway, I have noticed that over the past few articles I have made sure to plug when Peace Love and Stuff play. I try to have some variety when what I plug, not a lot to be honest because my tastes are what they are, but I try to be cognizant of when I am over publicizing a band, since there is a lot of love to spread around.

"Peace Love and Stuff I think what I’ve realized is that I like Peace Love and Stuff just that much and that maybe they don’t get the attention they should. They seem to hit all the right buttons for me. They have a rad lady on lead vocals, Lavonne McRoberts. They have a super talented guitarist in Dylan Boyle and their rhythm section more than holds their own...

"They come across playful, but also in control and confident. Peace Love and Stuff is super cool, super talented, unique and entertaining. Even if I may have been pushing them a bit too much, I can’t think of a more deserving band for that level of devotion."
- from Dave Murphy from the Des Moines Is Not Boring website

Lineup:
Lavonne McRoberts - vocals
Dylan Boyle - guitar
David Smit - bass
josephdavidsoukup - drums
Kevin Muehlenthaler - trumpet

IMSC Ep 27 - Song 2: "I, I, I" (the EP version) by Peace, Love, and Stuff (plus Chad Taylor from his Sound Stage column in Cityview)

"It can be hard to look at Peace Love and Stuff and see much besides singer Lavonne McRoberts. Not only because she looks the part — all vintage style with Kewpie doll looks — but because she’s loud, bombastic and bursting with energy on stage. She also has the good fortune of being backed by some really excellent musicians. Guitarist Dylan Boyle’s slide work was absolutely blistering, and the rockabilly rhythms churned out by bassist Jake Doll and drummer Joe McGuire were spot-on. 'I, I, I' is my favorite track from the band."
- from Chad Taylor in his Sound Stage column in Cityview

Ep 27 - Song 3: "Moonshine Lover" (live) by Lavonne McRoberts and Dylan Boyle (a plus video of "Moonshine Lover" by the original lineup of Peace, Love, and Stuff) (plus Rae Fehring on Peace, Love, and Stuff from her "Once More with Fehring" column on the Band Bombshell website)

"I will introduce you to a woman in music you should know but probably don’t. And to make it easier on me, I’ll just start with a name.

"Lavonne McRoberts.

"First, let’s just all agree that she has the coolest freaking name ever! It’s super judgy and probably I’m breaking 20 different feminist rules I have, but seriously her name just makes her sound like she’d be a bad-ass-cool-chic-in-a-band. And she is.

"As the lead singer of Peace, Love, & Stuff (ok, she’s taken all of the best names for anything ever), McRoberts presents as a throwback queen of rockabilly and sounds a little like the polyamorous offspring of Patti Smith, Lauren Bacall (it’s that raspy voice), Dolores O’Riordan, and Loretta Lynn...

"Her lyrics are graphic and simple, which is not to say they are without depth, but McRoberts deftly manipulates simple language into some really deep lines like, 'Cross my heart and hope to die—stick of dynamite in your eye.' #loveit..

"I highly suggest you get out to either a solo Lavonne McRoberts show or Peace, Love, & Stuff. Her stage presence is freaking amazing. She OWNS you when she takes the stage... She is a force for sure!"
- from Rae Fehring's "Once More with Fehring" column on the Band Bombshell website

Lavonne McRoberts - vocals, guitar
Dylan Boyle - guitar

IMSC Ep 27 - Extra 2: "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Peace, Love, and Stuff (plus Chad Taylor from his Cityview column, "Sound Stage")

This is another one of the covers that Peace, Love, and Stuff is known for. Again, I couldn't get the rights to play on the podcast, so I'm including it on the blog.

This video is from Fester Rage, whose YouTube channel is full of great performances from local bands.

"Peace Love and Stuff, the evening’s opening act, is a polished, high-energy act that’s a comfortable fit in a wide variety of lineups. Its sound is rockabilly infused and tight, with nary a weak link in the band. IMSC Ep 27 - Song 4: "Bonnie and Clyde" by Peace, Love, and Stuff (plus Chad Taylor from his Cityview review of "Too Lonesome to Cry")

"Much like with the Love Songs for Lonely Monsters album last year, there has been a lot of built-up anticipation over Peace Love & Stuff’s debut full-length. Well, the wait is over, and the result is glorious. Lead singer Lavonne McRoberts is amazing live but has one of the more underrated voices in town, and guitarist Dylan Boyle is a mad genius with a slide. They are both so good, it can be easy to overlook just how vital bassist Jacob Doll and drummer Joe Mcguire are to the band’s sound. But the album is so well mixed that it is easy to pick out every instrument and understand how well these four people work together. The album contains all three songs off the previous EP as well as nine additional tracks. 'I,I,I' is my favorite, but 'Arsenic and Lace' and 'Bonnie and Clyde' fight it out to be the album’s best track.'
- from Chad Taylor in a Cityview review of "Too Lonesome to Cry"

Ep 27 - Song 5: "Over You" by Peace, Love, and Stuff (plus Joe Lawler from a Juice magazine article)

"The band has built a following with its rockabilly sound, but is pulling more blues and pop influences into 'Too Lonesome to Cry.' McRoberts grew up around rockabilly and was attracted to its rebellious nature, but for 'Too Lonesome' she was looking for something a little different.

"'There’s more influence from blues artists like Ma Rainey on this,' McRoberts said. 'I tend to drink too much whiskey sometimes and I think it might affect my voice. It’s gotten more gravelly. The album has more of a Janis Joplin feel.'

'Peace, Love and Stuff got its start as a solo project for McRoberts, but she slowly started collaborating with other musicians around Ames. The current lineup has been in place for about two years. McRoberts called the lineup of drummer Joe McGuire, bassist Jake Doll and guitarist Dylan Voyle the best team she’s ever worked with.

'The band worked on “Too Lonesome to Cry” for about a year and a half. She said the length was partly due to wanting everything to be perfect, but that the imperfections started to win her over.

"'Lots of times it’s the random or unexpected things that happen in the studio that stand out,' McRoberts said. 'There’s a bit of studio magic that occurs when you’re in there for hours together.'

'At one point McGuire dropped a drum stick during an early take on the song 'Rebel.' McRoberts said it led to a musical break where there hadn’t been one, improving the song’s sound. As the band recorded at The Sonic Factory, they continued to experiment whenever possible.

"'If something sounded good, why not try it?' McRoberts said. 'Fun stuff happens and sometimes it turns into a good idea.'"
- from Joe Lawler in a Juice magazine article

Dylan Boyle - guitar
Jake Doll - bass

"It is rare that I have seen anyone perform on stage with the heart and passion that Lavonne does. Whether she has her feet on the ground or she's standing on the bar she will deliver an absolutely fabulous performance."
- from Jen Allen for this podcast/blog

"This band has become a monstrous rock and roll force in Iowa, bringing their ferocious style of blues-inflected rockabilly to parties and clubs all over the state. The band is fronted by the punk-as-fuck Wanda Jackson-esque local singer Lavonne McRoberts and she’s backed by a crack band that lays it down correct."
