Another feature we will have from time to time on here. The Band Bombshell was a Des Moines music website that ran for a year and a half in 2012 and 2013. It featured interviews, reviews, and other articles of the local scene in Des Moines and Iowa. We will feature some of the articles occasionally.

Five things to know before hitting up the Mews

The Vaudeville Mews is my fav music venue in Des Moines. It’s one of those places you’ve passed a million times and probably never noticed (and trust me, if you’ve ever drunkenly wandered in the Court Ave. District, you’ve passed it). It’s the kind of place where you bump into sweat-covered band members on your way to the bar. It’s a place where music-lovers can affectionately get their ears rattled all for the price of a cheap cover charge. But most importantly, it’s a place where the normals can spot an outsider in seconds—so don’t be caught actin’ like you don’t belong.

If you’ve never been to the Mews, take progressive action before you visit. Follow these tips and you’ll be one of the cool kids in no time:

IHEARIC VIDEOS: Two Classical Performances and Dana Telsrow Too!

We once again present some videos from the IHearIC channel on YouTube. We present two classical pieces, one tuba solo and another ensemble piece, and a performance of more popular music on acoustic guitar.

The first video features Kate Wohlman on tuba. The second features Nathaniel Lee on trombone with support from Kate Wohlman and other musicians. The third features Dan Telsrow, a mainstay of the Iowa music scene for a few years now.

IHEARIC VIDEOS - Three Classical Pieces: Flute, Horn, and Violin

This week, we basically present three pieces of classical music. One on flute by Madeline Walker. One on horn by Drew Phillips. And one on violin and electronics by Megan Karls.

"Rice-a-roni. Butts. Kissing. Lesbian Poetry is hard to define because Lesbian Poetry means a little something different to everyone.

"I’ve seen Elliot play more times than I can probably count. The first time I ever listened to Elliot’s music was on his couch in 2009, and he offered me some cereal and we didn’t talk at all. Later, I watched Elliot sing songs a cappella in his backyard with hunnies and fellas floating in the pool behind him. I’ve seen Elliot on a 625-acre farm in Eastern Iowa, unblinkingly rejecting the stage and sound system. With his voice out-loud and arms tied awkwardly behind his back, he stopped hearts with his even-paced drawl against the Iowa countryside. Aided by bare instrumentation, Elliot’s songs read as poems or folk tales. His songs have an amazing sense of humor and life that the listener feels like they’re chatting with an old friend or maybe even someone they kissed at a party once. And sometimes they’re profoundly sad. And that’s okay.

"Many of us know and love Elliot Burke, the main brains behind the operation that is Lesbian Poetry, but he’s very earnest about involving other Iowa musicians in his musical efforts. He’s currently playing with Luke and Wesley Belknap, who are both involved in their own musical pursuits in Iowa. He toured last summer with Little Ruckus, playing solo stuff but always excited to strum along to Dom’s tunes with his acoustic guitar and sweat-power grin. In the past, he’s been so down for whatever that he picked up his trumpet and toured the country with Mumford’s. Something about Elliot’s spirit makes him a natural third or twelfth member to any band.

"Liv Carrow is a guitarist, songwriter and song collector recently transplanted from Hudson, New York to the Iowa. Her music explores the shadowy terrain of Appalachian melody and traditional balladry in its many forms, crafting songs both strange and familiar that invoke American roots music, the British folk revival of the 60s, and the more contemporary wave of New England freak folk, with a sprinkling of 90s alt-indie earnestness. "Some bands and artists are presented in a way that they overcome pettiness and bring sheer beauty to the proceedings with their arrangements and their presentation. The pure scope, much like the electric feeling of a thunderstorm or the rushing waves of the ocean, makes that which doesn’t matter slide.

"That isn’t Lesbian Poetry. They attack the overwhelming feeling of everyday life in a different, maybe more substantial way. Gone are the trappings of production and in it’s place is honesty, simplicity and a different sort of ability. An ability to tell a story. I really like Des Moines Register/Juice and I think Joe Lawler does a great job. So, I don’t read Cityview in some sort of misguided attempt to avoid the mainstream and fight the corporate overlords; I just think Chad Taylor is a really good writer and seems to always have something interesting to say. "'Envy Corps is Radiohead for Coldplay fans.' That’s how the band has referenced itself in T-shirt form. And curiously, whether you take that as a statement of self-congratulation or one of oblivious pretentiousness, it doesn’t make the sentence any less fitting.

"The Envy Corps has always taken a high-minded approach to its own music. That some of it has brushed up against mainstream success seems more incidental than outright planned, and that suits the members of the band just fine. Having a random college freshman from upstate New York fall in love with your band at first listen (in a loud dorm in North Carolina, no less) says that just about any fan of pop music can love your work.
