CULTURE MYTH - Day 5: A rest

Written by Chad Taylor. Originally appeared on the Culture Myth website on March 22, 2016.

Rae Davis booked Sara Routh's tour. All three legs of it, in fact. For this west coast swing, Davis focused on finding gigs close to friends houses, which allowed Routh and Davis to save a ton of money on lodging.

We've talked about it before, but one can not put too fine a line on it: indie artists know they aren't going to make money on their self-funded tours, so every expenditure becomes vital to track. Anywhere you can find to cut costs, and potentially extend your tour one more day, you do it. This is what most galled indie artists who read about Pomplamoose's horrendous debacle of a tour back in 2014.

IOWA MUSIC SHOWCASE PODCAST - Episode 63: Iowa Country and Folk Music

We have featured both country music and folk music on this podcast before. But to be frank and honest, I have huge backlog of submissions. And by combining them, I can get a bunch finally out of you people, so you can hear them instead of just me!

So mosey on up to the porch, grab a rocking chair, lean back, lift up your poop-kickin boots up, and pull down your cowboy hat, and have a listen to these fine Iowa artists bringing some of that western flavour!

IMSC Ep 63 - Song 1: "I'll Take Anything (Haggard Ever Done)" by Randahl R Cady

"Hello to the world from America. Here you will find some songs I have written and covers of tunes I like {those would be the good ones} All the tunes are multi-tracked,there is no band. I hope you find something here that will bring you a bit of joy. Peace and take care...Randahl R"

IMSC Ep 63 - Song 2: "Sorry I Treated You Bad" by Pigs and Clover

"Pigs and Clover is a musical project and a way of life. Native Iowan singer-songwriters, Matt and Jamie (Fredericksen) Kearney met while students at the University of Iowa.

"Getting off the grid, keeping bees, shunning T.V. to pick and sing with friends, rescuing stray Pomeranians - these are a few of their favorite things.

"Matt grew up in Storm Lake, IA, the youngest of 4 siblings. He played trumpet in school jazz band and later switched to electric bass. He started songwriting with friends, usually singing and detasseling corn in the summertime. After high school, he played bass in bands in Northwest Iowa (The Perpetrators) and Colorado. He earned degrees in piano technology and electronics. Now Matt plays bass, guitar, banjo, mouth harp, jaw harp, piano and anything that isn't nailed down. He bicycles to his day job, and prefers barter over the exchange of fiat currency.

"Jamie hails from Clinton, IA, the oldest of three siblings. She plays acoustic guitar, drums and clawhammer banjo. Jamie wrote poetry for 3 semesters upon admission to the University of Iowa's Undergraduate poetry workshop and started writing songs as a member of the late 90's IC rock band, The Janet Theory. In 2014, she fulfilled a lifetime dream and traveled to Bolivia as a Paralegal member of a delegation of the National Lawyers Guild. Jamie's pet peeves include mushy apples and mechanical pencils.

"Pigs and Clover believe in the power of art to influence thought and inspire action, in the great tradition of American protest music. They find inspiration in a vibrant global community of workers, organizers, artists and activists, all fighting for social justice. But don’t pigeon-hole them as simply protest singers. They write and sing all kinds of songs about the human experience on planet Earth: however funny, sweet, sad, ironic, desperate or profound."

IMSC Ep 63 - Song 3: "Wild and Crazy" by Moonshine Sorrow

Moonshine Sorrow has had a lineup change and now go by Whiskey and Woe.

"Infusing their own blend of country-hell-billy Iowa folk rock, their greatest pleasure is rumored to be being too drunk to give a shit about anything." - from Moonshine Sorrow's Facebook page

IMSC Ep 63 - Song 4: "Thrill" by Nicholas Buckton

"Nicholas Buckton is a singer/songwriter from Des Moines, Iowa. Making music since he can remember, Buckton has been dubbed the 'Wild-Child' by many. Rooted deep in old-fashioned rock and roll and simple melodic lines, Buckton has created his own style of lo-fi indie rock that has an undeniable truth and catch to it. Recently, Buckton recorded, produced, and pressed a five-song EP entitled "The Summer of 1967" to much the public's admiration. Now in the act of playing shows, working on a full length album and attending parties—his musical vision has only just begun, and thank goodness for that! Buckton has always been around music, so much so that it literally radiates out of him. Whatever he does is musical, that is a gift not many have. He's been influenced, as made apparent in his music, by a vast number of artists-a list too long to even begin to put down. This man has the power to put raw emotion forward in a way that anyone and everyone can relate to and understand. Keep your wild, wide eyes on this one, folks!"

IMSC Ep 63 - Song 5: "Confluence" by Mississippi Jake and The Bootleggers Orchestra

"Mississippi Jake is storytelling, working class, folk music from the Midwest. Not the kind of folk that lulls you to sleep, the kind with teeth...

"Mississippi Jake brings folklore from the hills of the Ozarks to the Midwestern stage. He tells fact and fiction with honest guitar chords and gravel in his voice. Solo or alongside his Bootleggers Orchestra, Mississippi Jake showcases one-of-a-kind folk with teeth."

IMSC Ep 63 - Song 6: "Burn" by Pony Creek

"Pony Creek, a musical collaboration between Ryan Osbahr and Billie Frost, was formed in the spring of 2016. Hailing from the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro, the name “Pony Creek” is derived from a small creek by the same name that runs between the duo’s homes.

"Playing a variety of folk, blues, Americana, country and rock, Pony Creek has quickly made a name for themselves across the Midwest as one of the region’s hottest new acts. Whether playing Spencer, Iowa’s Wheels Up festival for RAGBRAI 2017 or rocking the crowd for southwest Iowa’s Tri City BBQ Fest in Denison, Pony Creek delivers family friendly entertainment that connects with all ages. Opening for national artists such as Jeremy McComb (Nashville), Jason Eady (Jackson, MS) and Tucker Beathard (Nashville), the band continues to gain popularity in the Midwest region.

IMSC Ep 63 - Song 7: "A Little Bit of Everything" by Randy Burk and The Prisoners

"Steeped in the rich tradition of Americana artists before him Randy Burk creates music that is at once exciting and familiar, honest and soulful, fearless and introspective. Wrought with Midwestern sensibility and a blue-collar work ethic, Burk's affinity for songs about love, life and pain can be traced to his small-town Iowa roots. Since 2001 Burk has released two albums and toured the Midwest, the West Coast, and Europe. Averaging 200 shows a year. As well as having shared the stage with artists from Big Smith to Jason Aldean." - from their Facebook page
